The story of By Sea By Land
My name’s Ed, I started & run By Sea By Land.
I’ve always loved being outdoors in nature, in the quiet wilderness & living in the Highlands I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible mountains, beaches, forests & everything in between to escape to.
When I was in a band many many years ago, I started playing around with Photoshop creating gig posters & band T-shirts, learning how to set files up to be screen printed.
This is where my love of graphic design was born.
I’ve been designing since around 2006.
It was in 2012 when I first decided to start a clothing brand under the name By Sea By Land.
The name came from my dad telling me about our Scottish clan ancestry which stems from the McDonald clan. Their motto is ‘Per Mare Per Terras’ which means by sea and by land. I loved what that motto conjured up to me & mixed with my love of Scotland It felt like a great name to encapsulate what I wanted the brand to represent.
That sense of adventure, exploration & taking inspiration from my surroundings.
Inspired by nature, designed for adventure & made to last.
